Reduci del Corona (Corona Veterans) is a photographic project aimed to document the emotional sphere and the possible onset of Post Traumatic Stress Disorders (PTSD) of the Italian medical staff who operated in Covid-19 units.
Focused on the northern regions of the Italy, the most impacted area during the first pandemic wave, the project started in 2020, from outside of the country using video calls, and was concluded at the beginning of 2023 when the UN World Health Organisation (WHO) declared the end of the Covid-19 emergency.
Documenting both the working and the private life of doctors, nurses, volunteers, and healthcare assistants, the project follow the emotional impact of the pandemic and how the event is confronted by those people who are working on the field.
The huge physical and intellectual workload, the enormous emotional burden caused by the daily contact with death, the forced confinement from the beloved ones and the family, the uncertainties of the disease; this tough daily dichotomy made the medical staff suffer high emotional stress that, for many of them, ended up in anxiety, fear, depression, panic attacks, anger, discomfort and loss of self-esteem.
None of them likes to be called hero, but they all feel like survived veterans.
In early 2023 the project has been finalised in a travelling exhibition on show in the Italian hospitals, and in an homonym book (Italian written).
